TERMS

Landscape Ecology- the sub-discipline of ecological science that studies the interactions among spatial patterns and the flows of organisms, energy, and materials.

Types of Landscapes- An “imaginary” is a complex understanding of a place or an era developed from multiple representations, some of which may be scientifically-observed and some speculative.

Mapping- a cultural act that requires the synthesis and representation of information, experiential observations, and ideas that originate from multiple sources using a defined spatial context.

Mosaic- spatial differentiation of all ecological and human processes; the most conspicuous characteristic of the planet, a continent, a region, or a landscape

Dynamic motion-generated by what may be slow or rapid flows that change the shape of the land itself (erosion, deposition, movement on fault lines, for example), changes in temperature that influence rapid flows of wind, water and fire (changes in climate or weather, over long periods or just over seasons and days), changes in vegetation (new species becoming more common, diseases or fires and floods that remove patches of trees and other plants, dispersal of plants by wind or water or fire) and changes in animal movement or human activity
